I cracked the screen on my Nokia N95 a few weeks ago when i stupidly slammed my car door on it. Whilst my phone was being repaired a few friends loaned me their old handsets. They were so awful, that when I finally got my Nokia N95 back yesterday I nearly cried. Well, not quite, but it was amazing how better my Nokia N95 felt in my hand, even before I started using it again. It really reinforced my belief that the Nokia N95 is the best phone on the market.
The first phone I tried to use was the Blackberry Pearl. I have a real dislike of Blackberry’s which probably isn’t justified, as I’ve never actually used one. I’ve never even picked one up I hate them so much. Why? Well, I hate Blackberries because I don’t like the typical Blackberry user, who only have one because of the corporate image, and not because they genuinely believe it is the best mobile email device. In fact, most of them have never even tried another smartphone.
After trying to use the Blackberry Pearl for about 10 mins I gave up and took my sim card out. I found the rollerball so difficult and frustrating to use, I didn’t even get around to setting up my email accounts. The final straw was when I tried to send an SMS and I just couldn’t get my heard around the QWERTY keyboard. For the life of me I couldn’t get my brain to adjust to a QWERTY keyboard on a phone, so I gave up and switched to a Sony Ericsson P990i that had been loaned by another friend.
The P990i was slightly better than the Blackberry Pearl, and was actually quite efficient apart from having to use the stylus i.e. two hands to access some functions. This was the main reason I switched from my P900 to Series 60 handsets, and I’ve never regretted the move.
My main beef with the P990i was the size. It was too big to put in my trouser pockets, and I hated carrying it to meetings as it was soo big it drew too much attention for the wrong reasons.
I’m just so glad to have my Nokia N95 back. It’s such a great handset that it’s going to be hard for Nokia to improve it. For me it’s one of Nokia’s best ever handsets, alongside greats like the Nokia 7110 (‘Matrix’ phone).
